For five weekends we have to
make all our own meals in a haus kuk(outdoor kitchen) that we have
made. We were provided with the materials and showed how to make one.
Then we were to make our own, either coping the demo or try something
different. Here is a picture of the sample haus kuk.
Next we started making our
own. Below is a series of pictures depicting my roommate, Crystal and
I making our haus kuk. In order to make it, our main tools were a
bush knife(machete), ax and twine.
We are provided with cooking
supplies for the weekends and they come in the boxes below.
These are also were we can
store some of our food that we buy for the weekends. We have a store
on site where we are able to get staples like those pictures below.
We also get eggs and powdered milk from the kitchen. There is also a
small market just up the road where we can get fresh produce each
weekend.
Things we can't get there
like seasonings we were able to get on a shopping trip into town
where we where also able to go to the produce market to get fresh
fruit and vegetables.
Some of the things we have
made so far are French Toast, Tortilla chips, Mexican Stew, Mac &
Cheese, and Sloppy Lentils.
We have to cook everything
over a fire that we have to make our self.
There are somethings that we need to keep cold over the weekend and sometimes through out the week. Below is what you would call a bush fridge.
We have three weekends left
of haus kuk and I'm excited to see how they go.
That's awesome Elizabeth! You guys did a great job! Those must be some of the most satisfying meals you've ever eaten. :-)
