Welcome to POC!!

Pacific Orientation Course(POC) is the training course that almost all missionaries coming to the South Pacific with Wycliffe and several other organization have to go through. Depending on your assignment there is a 6 or 14 week course. I will be doing the 14 week course. We have 27 adults and 18children here.

POC is located outside of the coastal town of Madang on a mountain called Nobnob. In the local language Nobnob means plenty noses. From up on the mountain we have an amazing view of the coast.

POC is designed to help us better relate to the people of Papua New Guinea. There are a lot of things that are covered in POC. There is language learning where we learn Tok Pisin, which is the common language in PNG. We have a teacher that we meet with and we have different trips we will go on to practice our Tok Pisin. There are classes were we learn about the history, geography and culture of PNG. We also work on our physical health which includes going on various hikes working up to a three day hike and going swimming with the goal of swimming a mile. We will make a “haus kuk”(house cook) where we will learn how to start a fire and cook different things over the fire. Every thing that we learn is to help prepare us for when we go to live in a village for five weeks towards the end of the 14 weeks.

If you would like to see some videos that a past student took of the POC center, you can go here. Thank you again for all your prayers, they have been much appreciated as I adjust.

Bel isi(Peace), Elizabeth
